Tet68’s tip.
Something that is very handy and works is the small disposable
alcohol wipes, they take up little space, are inexpensive, simply tear open and light. They don’t last long but are very hot and you can always use them to clean wounds and scrapes.

My son was on a canoe trip with a group of wilderness instructors when they had to camp in a pouring rain.
No one could start a fire, except my son.
He started a fire using only one match just like old Dad taught him.
I was never so proud!

A lighter.
Why make things difficult just because you think you are in a “survival” situation?

“Jeeves, I feel a slight chill. Do start a fire, please.”
2 mins later.
“Well done, Jeeves, we’ll have supper at eight, then.”
Done!

When I go out hunting my fanny pack always has 3 Bic lighters and 6 to 8 birthday candles.
I write the year on the lighters when I buy them and the next year I get 3 more and give the old ones to friends who smoke.
I can start a fire in a light-moderate rain or in a snowstorm with those.

Dryer Lint, and matches, in a ziplock
Even cotton balls don’t burn like dryer lint.
I’ve seen the match dipped in wax technique used also. It works.

Actually, flint, steel, and cotton are what I carry for emergency fire starting. Of course, there's a lot to be said for carrying a cigarette lighter, or if you have a backpack, a charcoal lighter.

In Alaska, I could see a need. Here in Florida, I can’t see worrying about it. A magnifying glass will work in a pinch, and there’s plenty of fuel, though it’s too often wet.
