You have to be able to use the “Declination Diagram” on the map.

This is a place on the map where you decline the insurance coverage.

Ah. Orienteering. Took it for College credit 20-odd years ago.
I found the best thing to do if you get lost under an electric tower on top of a scrubby hill covered with brambles is to scream, REALLY loud, until someone else from the class or the instructor hears you and takes pity on your lost behind and hauls you to safety while tripping over themselves because they’re laughing so hard they cry themselves blind.

Then, never go Orienteering again.

Get out binoculars. Look for a satellite dish on a house.

It points in a generally southern direction in the northern USA.

I was born in the South, and most of my family are still there but I never acquired the taste for grits. Just doesn’t taste like food. I’ll take pan fried potatoes or okra over grits any day of the week.

I was stationed in Hawaii for a number of years. Poi is the local equivalent. I tried for years to like it, never could.

First, I won’t get lost because I don’t hike.

Second, I don’t want to go North.

Of course you could check the sun, turn so your left shoulder is west, then you will be facing north.

Not trying to make you like grits, but. My Younger Brother introduced me to , next day chilled and extra-firm cold grits.
Take todays grits, place in square glass casserole., refrig. overnight. Next day slice 1/2” thick slabs and fry in light bacon fat. goes great with a couple of eggs.
Altogether different taste and texture.
My crazy Brother also like Cold Collard Greens “sammich”. with Mayo and Tabasco, Said it cured hangovers?
Stay healthy.

If there is land South of where you are, then you already are North.

Florida is the only state in the union where you have to drive north to get to the south

You mean you can’t tell where west is by watching the sun? You should not be out by yourself. I learned that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west at an a very young age

Been a long time.but... A couple of sun shots by transit, a current solar ephemeris table, one accurate and precise time piece, trig tables, logarithmic tables, mathmatical muscle exercise and there you have it true north.

LOL, I feel a little guilty for not liking grits. I’ve smiled through meals and asked for seconds faking it for years.

I’ve tried it fried in bacon fat, got to admit, bacon fat makes anything taste better.

Now collard greens are a different story, awesome!

I found the two other methods even more useful.

Good catch. Thanks!

Actually it's the South side in the southern hemisphere.
