I’m more interested in being able to get home from the pub legally and safely.

My first thought about driverless cars was that I could take a nap on the way to work.
I must be old.

I would love it for my parents. My mom isn’t medically allowed to drive, but she’s only in her 60s.
However, there’s still just too many things about it that rubs me the wrong way.

Whats so enticing about the (just-around-the corner) self-driving cars?
This should be obvious - the enticement for government and for statists is the opportunity to control the mobility and personal freedom to move of the people. That's been a huge part of the push for mass transit, despite decades of evidence that people don't want it.
Self-driving cars - and I admit that I'm fascinated by the technology - will allow the control freaks of the left to insist that people can't be trusted to propel a ton of metal down the road at 70 mph and will use insurance regulations and new legislation to force us into giving up our personal mobility.

Can’t wait.
Dislike driving and have yet to observe a human, other than a full time professional, who should be trusted with a few thousand pounds of metal moving at 65 mph (anyone who couldn’t also do a carrier landing at night is not anyone I want driving within a few miles of me). Maybe it’s where I live, but most people can’t even PARK well, almost none can merge smoothly and the number of morons who don’t even use turn signals (something that should result in immediate removal of all driving privileges) is more than half.
Personally, I’d allow humans to drive, but only after *rigorous* yearly testing and vehicle inspections. Maybe 1 out 100 should be doing so, at most.
Maybe somewhere else you can find people that know how to drive, here in California, nope.

I remember kidding my grandfather about dating in a horse and buggy when I was little. He smiled and said “The horse knew where to go so you could mind to other business”. I was older before I understood what he meant and what the smile was about.

We are going full circle.
Back before automobiles there were horses and carriages. One of the things about horses is they knew their way home and could get there without any directions from the “driver”.
(No first hand knowledge as I am not THAT old, but read enough where this fact was mentioned to consider it true)
