Donald Trump’s foreign policy speech has created expectations that he will match Marco Rubio’s pledge to stand by the commitments made by President Bush to Israel’s Prime Minister Ariel Sharon in Bush’s letter dated 14 April 2004.

I don't understand why this David Singer is comparing Trump's stand on Israel to Rubio's. The appropriate comparison should be Ted Cruz's position, which has always been unequivocal support for Israel!

BTW, Cruz has been to Israel three times and met with top Israeli officials. What is Trump's history on that?

History? Better. Trump has cachet with the PM. Trump made a campaign reelection ad endorsing Netanyahu.

I was a Cruz supporter, too. He lost my respect and disappointed me. I see the way the wind’s blowing. Trump, for better or worse, is the Obiwan. I’m beginning to believe, however, that that might not be a bad thing after all.

Good question. I heard Trump say he was the honorary grand marshal of a 2004 “salute to Israel parade” in NYC. Not sure how that qualifies for foreign policy experience :-) In the last Dem debate I saw, Hillary spoke out strongly in favor of Israel defending itself from rockets and extolling how they withdrew from Gaza and got attacked for it in return. I don’t trust her but she seemed to say all the right things. If I were to guess, I’d guess that her internal polling is showing NY State too close for comfort in head to head vs Trump.

Why would Trump have gone to Israel in the past, unless purely as a tourist? He was a businessman until last June, not a pol trying to curry favor with (some) Jews and evangelicals.

Meanwhile, Trump’s daughter and grandchildren by her are Jewish - and I’m sure that she’s reinforced his natural pro-Israel stance. “Natural” because he’s been in NYC for most of his life, and dealt with a LOT of Jewish partners, lawyers, accountants, friends, etc. Plus, he’s donated a lot of money to pro-Israel charities and led the Israel Day parade. DJT is VERY pro-Israel, and that is very evident to this writer, a Jew who is very aware of where various pols stand on this issue.

Oh, and “YES” I know that Cruz is very pro-Israel. Good for him, he’s got common sense and decency...just like a lot of others.
