"A Republic, if you can keep it." Donald Trump and the Tyranny of the Mob...

For the last eight years I’ve been shaking my head, simply bewildered that so many Americans could be so insane as to vote for Barack Obama for president. Not surprisingly, once Obama was ensconced in the White House things played out pretty much as predicted with virtually every month bringing new news of a faltering economy, a shrinking workforce and more government waste, intervention and tyranny. In 2012, after Fast and Furious, the IRS Tea Party scandal, Obamacare and, most of all, Benghazi, I was sure that Americans would rise up and throw out the anti American Obama and vote for the less than conservative, but exponentially superior Mittens Romney. Alas, the population spoke, and they doubled down on the fascist living at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

I was certain that year that if only a real conservative who could eloquently articulate the basic tenants of small government and fiscal responsibility had run he would have won by a landslide. After all, wasn’t it obvious that Barack Obama was the worst president in American history and the Democrats were rapidly devolving into open Socialism? But as we know, there was no such conservative running and Milquetoast Mitt was shellacked.

Now, in 2016 we find ourselves in an utterly different situation. We have a rock solid conservative running for the White House. Who can and does eloquently articulate the ideas behind our founding principles of limited government, individual liberty as well as the fundamental idea of American Exceptionalism. Yet, somehow he’s losing the GOP nomination fight… to a guy who’s a big government crony capitalist who has spent most of his life supporting Democrats and their liberal policies. Essentially he’s losing to a vapid populist whose idea of debating is throwing insults and lies around like confetti rather than providing substantive positions on practically any issue.

The next couple of weeks will tell the story, but the fact that we are at this point says a lot about the United States and the American people. That half the population are voting for an avowed socialist or a socialist in liberal clothing is sad. That one third of the remainder are actively supporting a populist candidate with little understanding of the issues at stake never mind the concepts of limited government, free markets and individual freedom upon which this country was founded, is disheartening.

The United States is not a democracy and never has been. We are a republic with a separation of powers and limited government that are unique in the history of government. It was that limited government and the companion individual liberties upon which the government is not to tread that created more prosperity for more people around the world than any government, state or entity in all of human history. Today all of that is in peril as almost 2/3 of the population are seemingly prepared to travel down a path of dismantling the limitations on government our Founding Fathers put in place.

After eight years under a president who decried the Constitution as a “Charter of negative liberties” the next president will have a choice. Either bring the progressive attack on the Constitution and freedom to a halt or pick up where Obama leaves off and continue down that path. Unfortunately, three of the four remaining candidates – John Kasich doesn’t count as a real candidate – are more than happy to jettison the Constitution and pander to the masses. Whether it’s Germany or Argentina or Venezuela, such populist movements rarely turn out well.

Populist movements share one underlying characteristic… they seek to harness the anger of the mob. Once the shackles of constitutional limits are thrown off, there is little to restrain government or the people other than the character of the leaders, and often that’s simply not enough. As Maximilien Robespierre learned, the consequences of doing so can be, shall we say, unforeseen… and unfortunate.

The United States is not a democracy and never has been. We are a republic

This guy is writing more barfed up dog's dinner to justify a government of the few, by the few and for the few.

How well has the media made anything stick against trump? Is there anyone who doesn’t know trump has committed adultery, has a wife who posed nude, is very rich and other things democrats and conservatives consider vices ?

Too bad that the reality of the situation is that Cruz has won 4 actual elections so far this primary season. He came in 3rd place in 4 of the last 5 elections. Voters do not like Cruz enough to vote for him. Cruz consistently loses all the demographics he says he will win such as evangelicals, conservatives, etc. I think that if Cruz somehow managed to weasel his way into the nomination he would likely win less states in the general than his new buddy Romney did in 2012. I think Cruz as nominee would be a disaster.

The problem with reality TV is that way to many people actually believe that it is real. In fact even more astonishing is how many believe that most of what is on TV is real!

If you are going to excerpt and article, please excerpt the juicy bits and not the first so many words that fit.

Perhaps the author should reflect that this is a representative republic. The uniparty has forgone the representative part for some years now.

Excellent point. And when the People try to restore that, you get the elites implying that all of a sudden we're headed for mob rule.

These idiots really couldn't be more detached from the reality of the fact that we live in a de facto oligarchy.

From where I'm standing, these "democratic" currents that the elite are so concerned about warning us about, wherein the People express their outrage regarding said oligarchy, are, far and away, a positive influence, especially when driven by the conservative public.

Do the elites remember the phrase "of the People, by the People, and for the People"? Ooooh, scary democracy!

Of course democracy has its excesses. But the Revolution that Donald Trump is trying to accomplish isn't one of them.

Vote Trump

I believe the democrats want Trump to get the nomination. They are waiting for it and when he does they will bring forth the big guns and air all his dirty laundry. Many of his supporters will simply stay home come November.

That statement is in such diametric opposition to the actual facts that it's laughable.

Ted Cruz is the party's savior?

It's unfortunate when people let their hysterical bias overcome reason and logic.

And, nice job with the "concern troll" routine. Just admit that you're "NeverTrump" and be done with it.

You can use the internet to get to the bottom of these kinds of slanders pretty quickly. No Trump does not own strip clubs. The Taj uses his name under license.

Maybe Trump is winning because middle America is tired of voting for the nice guy who is reluctant to tangle with the Democrats and pee their pants at the idea of being called racist.

Republicans lost the last two elections because the candidates were too afraid to go after Obama.

Daniel 2:21 It is he who controls the procession of times and seasons, who makes and unmakes kings, who confers wisdom on the wise, and knowledge on those with discernment,

Low info Cruz forgot that Goldman Sachs owned him.

Of course they will.

But which potential Republican nominee won't they do that for?

Many of his supporters will simply stay home come November.

Some will.

Many more are so embittered about what the Uniparty has been doing to them for a generation they'll crawl over broken glass to vote Trump.

The “rock solid conservative” running is not that at all. The author, and Cruz’s supporters choose to ignore that their messia is a chameleon who is in reality just another Bush. Always has been. But some of you neocons actually think you are “conservatives”. The Bush family “conservatism” is dead, finally. It has been as destructive to our economy and soldiers as anything the Rats have done.

Cruz offers no path to fix our economy, and actually supports free trade that destroys our manufacturing. A VAT tax plan to go with it. Most of his owners - yes, I said OWNERS - are the Cheap Labor Express.

Tyranny of the mob? No, lunacy of the Cruzlims.

It’s over. Go vote for Hillary.

Who?
I'm serious, who?

If you're talking Ted Cruz, I have one question:
How does asserting that one born outside the States and to, at most, one citizen conserve anything?
(This loose qualification would allow, over time, foreign monarchs to be eligible for the presidency… I'm quite sure that's not what the founders intended.)

That makes one of us.

That makes two of us.

Caucuses rely on collectivist groupthink to cajole voters into voting for whoever the party apparatchiks favor.

They product results strikingly different than when an individual is allowed to go into a private voting booth and vote their conscience, as opposed to being harangued and having party bosses stand over their shoulder.

Now, while not all caucuses are identical, the general weaknesses of the caucus system have been adequately documented by numerous articles over the years.

That's one of the reasons that caucuses are hardly used anywhere. There's a reason why formal primaries dominate the delegate selection process in America.

Vote Trump

What kind of Trump dirty laundry would stop me from voting for him? Why don't you think something up and I'll tell you if I think it would stick.

What a joke this is. Trump has been under attack from all sides for many months with the most vile and evil tales against him. Trump only gets stronger as the increased flak shows he is over the target.
