He was roundly mocked by cavuto not for calling a ring but for saying the rings were 10 feet off the ground in New York as well.
No one has a clue what that means.
Serious bozo.

There should be a test to be President. Every candidate should have to stand on stage, and throw a baseball. If they throw like a girl, they’re out. Immediately. I think Cruz would fail that test.

boxing hoop.
Rings are for boxing and they are square. But then boxers never did major in geometry. LOL.

Didn’t Ted ask for a couple guys to sweep the lane with little pushbrooms as he drove for the ring?
That will impress my fellow Hoosiers.

Then
eliminaTed talked smoothly about the good-sized bouncing rubbery spheroid being hurled skillfully toward that metal ring, but missing it completely, and, instead, crashing through the netting material made of fabric, then falling harmlessly to the cold, hard, floor, and resulting in a home run or a touchdown by the hockeyball player, as declared by the designated field umpire.

Sometimes a word is just a mistake or the result of misspeaking, other times it reveals a lot about a guy. “Ring” falls into the latter category.
It is emblematic of Cruz. This is from his book:
“In his book A Time For Truth, he writes, I refused to play sports as a child. That of course, made me even worse. That mix-excelling in the classroom, being too competitive and cocky about academics and being lousy at sports-was, needless to say, not a recipe for popularity.

So what? I never liked or played boogie-ball and could care less about a hoop/ring, so why would anyone else?

So what? I never liked or played boogie-ball and could care less about a hoop/ring, so why would anyone else? Apparently, loser Cruz thought Indiana would care since he was trying to use the reference to garner votes.

Maybe Ted can get a job driving a Zamboni around the hockey ring in Edmonton.

Texas isnt a big basketball state, their sport is football.True to some extent, but the Dallas Mavs and San Antone Spurs prevented Lebron's Miami Heat from having a winning record in the NBA Finals.
So even with Texas's football emphasis, it kicks ass in other sports, too.

I think lyin, cheatin, colludin, Ted was already heading for defeat in Indiana, but this basketball “ring” thing in the Hoosier state of all places was a MAJOR faux pas. Other places wouldn’t care, but THERE? OMG, this guy is such a phony and God will not be mocked. God also has a sense of humor. I don’t think Ted is laughing tonight. What a douche.

It is the Cruz phoniness that comes across - not teh slip of the tongue. This is something the old fashioned politicians are just not able to wrap their heads around - Trump is who he is. Cruz has that politician persona that is practiced and compared to Trump it comes off as phony.
