I think you’re right. My own pet theory is parts of the brain that govern certain social functions where overwritten with functions more useful for certain type of mental tasks. Kind of like how babies know how to swim from birth but the function goes away at around 2 years old and has to be learned later in life. I think that the swimming “subroutine” was overwritten by another function.

I think it could be a matter of brain energy. Less energy goes to social functions for some reason, leaving more available for math and logic.

Regarding post #68: The doc that runs the hyperbaric chamber we use did his doctoral research on ASD and hyperbaric therapy. His name is Frank Morganti, and he runs Pittsburgh Hyperbaric. His theory is that ASD patients have less oxygen going to certain parts of the brain. The hyperbaric chamber therapy increases the amount of oxygen, and also creates new capillaries. Upon our first round, my son's “quirks” lessened greatly. We go back every now and then for what we call a top up. As our son learns new things or experiences new social aspects, the top up is necessary to bring him back to a more level existence; i.e., fewer, if not no, irrational meltdowns and an increased ability to socialize with others.
