Oh I know exactly who you are referring to. Conservative Dems, AKA Reagan democrats who disappeared 30 years ago who never found a reason to vote for a conservative or even a Republican for that matter in all that time. Quite simply. Their support is fickle. Based on personality not on principle. It's Trump or walk.
And if your powers of persuasion can't get them to see that voting for Cruz over Hillary or Bernie is not in their best interest that only reinforces their stupidity. Or your lack of powers of persuasion.
