I agree, but the fact that things are still in doubt would give Cruz a bit of leverage in return for throwing in the towel. Not Veep (and how could Trump, after saying that Cruz is ineligible?), but maybe Solicitor General (A.G. was likely already promised to Christie), followed by the S.C. in a couple of years.
What you suggest is possible, but less likely than it was before Cruz went after Trump’s wife. Now all bets are off, IMHO. Cruz blew up his lifeline.
