I'm not sure how true that is. I follow this for Free Republic and I had @TedCruz with 865K followers as of March 1. He's currently at 925K followers which is consistent with the trend I've been seeing. I find it hard to believe he could surge to 1.2m and then drop to 923K without me noticing it because I check these constantly.

Ted Cruz also has a Twitter handle for his senate seat @SenTedCruz and that currently has 739K followers. While I don't track that one as carefully, it seems pretty consistent with what I've seen.

BTW, I'm not a Cruz supporter but I thought I'd point those facts out.
