The morons up here bought pigs for farming and cut them loose in the National Forest off the Appalachian Trail.

+1 for 300 Blackout. I also agree, hog hunts around here are not sport, it’s about wiping out a invasive nuisance.

We hunt them as pest control and harvest the meat of every critter.
What my family can’t use is given to a local church, who, with help from a local boy scout troop, donate it to food banks.

There are some FReepers that could help you out with that.

I always try to harvest the meat. If the hog is much over 200 pounds, not good for much more than tamales.

Thanks

My son is talking about us going to Texas on a pig hunt. Guess the prices for a hunt are pretty reasonable?

I’ve fought off a grown bear with only an E-tool once, and killed four large wild dogs in an attacking pack with my bare hands (and foot). Not a scratch on me in either case. Think I’ll be okay. If not, its a good way to go.

Guided hunts are expensive.
But there are places that will pay you to harvest hogs. Of course, thats for experienced hunters and those who hunt them for a living.

I’ve killed several hundred here on the ranch in the last 25 years and they keep coming back.

They are prolific breeders. I read an article published by the Oregon F&G Department that said you have to kill 70% of them annually just to maintain a level population.

So, uh... how much of the hog is left to eat after being hit by a .375 H&H magnum? Just axin'. :)

(Fun to be talking about this stuff for a change instead of the primaries...)

E-Tool = Entrenching tool; US Army style. Out camping in central PA, did all right things (no open food, all waste far from camp, all gear stowed up high). Ranger told me reports of bad bear who wasn't afraid of people had been spotted so maintain awareness. He came into camp and reared up, did one "fake" charge at my puppy (Chow Chow). Didn't want her to get killed, so when he reared up second time I charged him from 10 yards. Element of surprise, got two very good licks in; dropped shovel pulled knife ready to try to get on his back when he ran off.

Dog pack was in rural park near urban area, starting following, then circled me and my dog. Alpha was a shepherd, runners up were two pit types and a dobie. Chow did watch my back which helped. Killed shepherd straight off with crescent kick to head (broke neck, somewhat lucky), dropped on pit #1 and crushed chest (me 210 lbs), took second from kneeling position with front choke, broke neck. Last one was fighting with my dog who had his throat and wouldn't release so I dropped on him and punched side of head until he stopped moving.

I hate those wild hogs. When I lived in Texas they were more destructive than any of the thunderstorms or tornadoes. We would shoot dozens of them in one time mooching under the deer feeder and the next day there would be another herd of them. They don’t even taste good so in to the ground they went.

Surprised at that.
Last year was in western North Carolina during winter and saw quite a bit of rooting.
Folks there said it is new.
