Trump’s Road to the White House Just Became Smoother

To me, Trump’s victory in the Republican primaries seems inevitable. To the clueless Republican political establishment – not so much

The results are in from the most recent Republican primary in South Carolina. As predicted, Donald Trump won his second consecutive primary contest. Trump- 32% and the runners up- being Senator Cruz and Rubio, both at about at 22%.

I hate to the bearer of bad news to the Republican political establishment, the “Anyone But Trump” cabal of fat cat fossilized old fogies; those die-hard denizens of the National Review and the Weekly Standard- the sanctimonious keepers of the conservative flame; and of course, those hundreds of long-time wealthy and well-connected conservative politicos who have been backing Jeb Bush and Marco Rubio.

You’re dead wrong.

Trump stands for America.

“Trump is a pragmatic populist with conservative leanings.

He is what the country needs right now.”

Amen. Go Trump. To heck with Purist conservatism at a time like this - put America first. Trump can win the general election and the rest of them cannot (do we want a Romney type of loss repeat? have we not learned from our mistakes on how to lose the general election?)

Bring back our manufacturing jobs and keep out the illegals; this HAS to be our priority right now and if that is “all” we get, so be it.

The rest of it will follow naturally anyway if conservatives can keep the momentum after the election with a Trump win and be smart about it.

Once we get the jobs the rest will follow anyway - by by welfare state ...

My guess is that Cruz is ahead in that arena. He fights harder, dirtier, and more effectively than does Rubio. He is far better organized and has a deeper small donor base. I think Trump is looking for a warrior VP and not a nice guy.

See, my guess is Rubio.

Trump has signaled that he prefers someone from a battleground state.

He also said he wanted a politician... "we don't need two of me"... which I take to mean that he's going to be the "big picture" guy who communicates broad initiatives, and his VP will be the guy that makes the trains run on time. That's probably consistent with his business model.

If you were looking for someone to get the various factions of government to cooperate to achieve great things, I don't think you'd pick the guy who is almost universally disliked in DC. That's really not intended as a slam towards Cruz...

Your reply is very reasoned!!! It also is EXACTLY how Reagan ran our government many conservatives were unhappy with many of his decisions but were elated with others!!! I DO NOT expect EVERYTHING to go our way but I certainly expect more push back than wheat we have now!!!! Reagan made a HUGE mistake with amnesty he opened the flood gates for what we have now! This is going to be a HUGE problem for Trump but I totally expect him to fix it!!! Right now solving this ONE problem is enough for me because without the fix our republic is DONE!!! None of our so called conservative views will mean a damn thing!!! Some on this site WOULD NOT elect Reagan today!!!! Just sayin!!!!

If he even picks a current candidate.

Picking the governor of a purple state would be smart. Picking a clearly conservative, tough African American senator/representative from a purple state would be doubly smart.

Rubio and Cruz will both stay in. That means that they are not saying so, but in reality they are jockeying for Vice Presidential nomination by Trump.

Cruz and Rubio are NOT natural born Citizens and neither are eligible for the office of V.P. of the United States.

I agree with your post in all regards except one: I think that the Trump/Cruz well is a bit too poisoned to drink from right now (and perhaps forever). Unless and until they apologize to each other for a lot of the dirt that has been flung both ways, and until the issue of Cruz’ eligibility has been definitively resolved*, I don’t think that Trump can choose Cruz for Veep without destroying his own credibility. Yes, even Trump cannot overcome the “he’s a liar, a big liar” and the “he’s not eligible to be President” memes, no matter how popular he is - not until those issues are resolved.

That said, I would LOVE to see a Trump/Cruz ticket. I like them both (with neither being perfect, of course). They complement each other nicely. Trump has real-world executive experience, and a LOT of it. He’s an uber-nationalist, he has the common man’s sense of what is wrong with our society, combined with a successful executive’s knowledge of how to fix a lot of problems. Cruz, OTOH, knows the government (and the people in it) inside and out, and both thoroughly understands and believes in our Constitution. He will solidify the Conservative and southern base of the GOP, allowing Trump to pick off a lot of traditional Dem voters. Trump could easily allow Cruz to come up with recommended picks for openings in the Judiciary, and give him great influence in picking the Attorney General and forming the Administration’s legal policy (rooting out political corruption - IN BOTH PARTIES - should be at the top of the list). More importantly, it will set the stage for Cruz, now in his mid-40s, to have a great launching pad for a Presidential campaign in 2024. Alternatively, I wouldn’t mind seeing Cruz nominated to fill Scalia’s seat...Trump could score some BIG points on that issue if it is handled the right way.

* Note that even though I’m an attorney who can analyze words and laws pretty well, the issue of who is a “Natural Born Citizen” in terms of the eligibility of a person to be the POTUS is unsettled. I can make an argument both ways IN MY OWN MIND regarding Cruz’ eligibility, so I am definitely NOT taking sides here. I think that if he is nominated for POTUS (and, probably, for Veep), this issue will necessarily have to be resolved by the Supreme Court. No, I’m not happy about a Scalia-less Court looking at this issue (or any other, for that matter), but it will be necessary nonetheless.

The Constitution might be irrelevant to you, but there are millions of Americans who swore an oath to protect and defend it.

The U.S. Supreme Court has already decided the issue.

I agree, if a deal is made, it would most likely be Trump/Rubio.

But I also see Cruz being pulled in to support them if Trump wins.

Jungle primary. We have this with a new law in California. You get two Democrats running against each other.

“No fortunately for you you are going to get a patriotic American with a can do attitude and a will to make America great again. :-)”

To me, the single most important function of government is to physically protect the people of this country (which includes “allowing” us to continue to literally defend our own lives from criminals and our liberties from the government). Part of that is also, necessarily, to protect and back our allies, while simultaneously opposing or undercutting our enemies and their allies. Second most important is to protect their ability to earn a decent wage, so that there is both a high level of happiness AND the ability to properly fund the physical protection. This issue goes to tax policy, a balanced budget (or at least moving substantially in that direction), regulatory policy and immigration policy.

On both of these issues (or all four - Defense, Foreign Policy, Economic/Budget Policy and Immigration Policy), Trump comes out better than (or, at worst, at least equal to) any of the other candidates. That’s good enough for me. As to all of the other issues out there, while they are important, they are not nearly as critical as the others. Obama and the Dems are dead wrong on those issues, so allowing Bernie or Hillary to win would make the “side issues” rather moot.

Right now, we need to literally save our country. On the issues that are critical to get right in order to do that, Trump is conservative enough for me. Anything else is cream on the cake, but I am not obsessed with the cream. Let’s first make sure that we have a house in a decent, in which we can have a working oven to bake that cake...THEN worry about the frosting.
