yeah and that’s a problem with Cruz because how in the world is he going to win purple states in the general election when you are already excusing bad showings because the states aren’t Conservative enough?.. there are a load of states Obama won twice that need to switch to Cruz in a general election and it’s just not going to happen.. you just explained the problem with nominating Cruz very well in your post

Yup. After Trump there is a pack of three to five candidates depending on the poll (Cruz, Kasich, Christie, John Ellis Bush, Rubio). This will actually be an excellent test of Cruz' get out the vote capability, as he has a full organization there, but so do the others. The difference is that of that group, only Cruz and John Ellis Bush are really organized for the SEC primaries on 3/1/2016, where guys like Kasich and Christie have to rely on a FAST infusion of cash to be able to project a presence in those states.
