He's been dead and freeze-dried since, well, I'm not gonna go out of my way to check his wiki because he was a zero even back in the 30's, to anyone who was paying attention, before his boy Arlo was a twinkle in his Marxist eye.
WWII really muddied things up in this way. All the American communists who hated their own country back then, became patriots of convenience when Hitler attacked Mother Russia. Hence "This land" became a populist anthem that is still taught to little kids in kindergarten, when really it was just an ode to the collective.
"Alice's Restaurant", which our generation is familiar with, was Arlo's work. I've heard it a couple of times and I don't even recall what it was about. Something about a bunch of stoners at Thanksgiving. Music by a stoner, for stoners. A stoner who was a Marxist just like his old man, the apple didn't fall far from the tree.
So anyway, you didn't quite have your communist Guthries right, but OTOH you weren't far from right. Just one generation removed. :)
Damn, I wish there was a list somewhere perhaps created by the government that had all the rat-commies on it.
