Aristotle teaches that while we must love our friends, we must love truth more. Today, I am probably going to lose some good friends, which is painful. Nevertheless, my admiration for everything America was, everything modern civilization was, compels me to bite the bullet.
Donald Trump may win the Republican presidential nomination. He may even be elected President of the United States -- stranger things have certainly happened recently. However, while his popularity is understandable, an essential question remains: Is Trump the kind of leader who might begin to restore a crumbled constitutional republic?

bump
At this point the only choices are Trump and Cruz.
The question becomes which one? From my perspective I am equally happy with either, and by the time my state gets around to having a primary, the nomination will most likely be locked up and my vote will not influence the outcome.
Ping. This is a long article but a really good detailed explanation of why many people (myself) included don’t trust Trump and don’t believe he is the right person to save the country in 2016. The article is based in fact and not emotion/anger. Mark Levin agrees with it and I pretty much agree with it as well.
He’s a progressive and seems to have most success at turning weak kneed conservatives into democrats.
If our nation’s problems were material, Trump could lead us back.
But our nation’s problems are not material - they are first spiritual and moral. Without a spiritual and moral revival/recovery, a material recovery may come for a while - but it will not last.
Trump’s base philosophy is not spiritual or moral. It is totally material: winning, success, profit - and ego. This is why when it profits him, he is liberal, as in the past. When it profits him, he is conservative - and being quite smart he knows that’s what he needs now to “win”. He also is not “big” on recovering the Constitution - which indeed has both spiritual and moral roots.
I’ll take Trump over any Democrat, of course. But only Cruz has both the spiritual and moral foundation to lead us back.
It appears that there might be, but we have a hard task before us.
Do not forget our objective: the safety and welfare of our children and the American Dream.
No candidate in recent memory better exemplifies The American Dream than Donald Trump. There are many honest, uncorrupted and clear-thinking Americans who understand that, and the more we are insulted and called names simply because we do not choose to support the same candidate others do, the greater Trumps based of support will be.
Personally, I very much want a Trump/Cruz ticket.
It will probably take more than 8 years to turn this country around.
They are both strong but in different ways. They would make a good team.
It took the United States 60 years to get to this point, it will take 60 or more years to turn it around. That said, you have to start somewhere.
Pre-any Primary, tend to have some agreement with what you say. Once we have a the first set of Primaries behind us, the whole ballgame and my view may change.
Trump/Cruz might be a vey good team. Although, I suspect, and Trump probably recognizes as well, that if Trump started going off the rails, Cruz will not hesitate to say so. He would not be any more a go along VP than he has been a go long Senator.
The author asks a good question then answers it wrongly IMO. The answer is yes - if that is ALL Trump does then he would be a successful President.
Silly hand wringing bump.
I’m not interested in exchanging one EO emperor for another.
It will not take 60 years to correct America. It took 60 years for the dems to “incrementally” alter American politics a small almost unnoticeable step at a time (boiling the frog).
The American citizens did not change, there has always been a significant number who had no problem with their hand in your pocket and a lesser but more powerful smaller percentage of patriots who do the right thing constantly.
“Although, I suspect, and Trump probably recognizes as well, that if Trump started going off the rails, Cruz will not hesitate to say so. He would not be any more a go along VP than he has been a go long Senator.”
That’s fine by me. I don’t want any yes men or go along types.
That said, Trump has managed to change the entire election dynamic by himself. I don’t think that Cruz would have risen towards the top if Trump hadn’t first wiped out the GopE candidates.
I do not believe America will be restored by normal constitutional means.
I agree with you. I do not expect Obama to leave.
The Black Swan is due to migrate soon.
"Ideas have consequences." - Weaver
America's Founders understood civilization's long struggle for individual liberty and against the ideas whose consequences are tyranny and oppression. The world was changed by their choice and courageous actions on behalf of liberty.
It was John Adams who said: "The foundation of every government is some principle or passion in the minds of the people." Clearly, the Founders' passion was for liberty, and in order to secure that liberty, they sought out and incorporated into the United States Constitution those ideas and principles which had been capsulized and embodied in their Declaration of Independence.
The French historian, Guizot, once asked James Russell Lowell, "How long will the American republic endure?" Lowell replied: "As long as the IDEAS of the men who founded it continue dominant."
Inasmuch as the current battle is a "battle of ideas," one cannot assume that a mere man or woman can "restore America." American liberty can be restored, "IF the motivating "principle or passion in the minds of the people is LIBERTY, and if that passion causes them to exert the determination and will to complete the needed restoration of the IDEAS upon which the great American experiment was based." See
A knowledgeable and willing leader can be instrumental in helping "the PEOPLE" to rediscover and assert those ideas, but John Adams' words remain a wise caution for today's citizens who remain, in the words of Justice Joseph Story, "the only KEEPERS of the Constitution." - Joseph Story, "Commentaries on the Constitution. . . ."
