The problem can be eliminated by checking in the preview bow for a small quote. Simply replace the offending characters by hand.

I am reminded of the Sears Roebuck catalog of 1897: “If you don’t find it in the Index, look very carefully through the entire catalog.”

Then Google and Amazon came along. Now those machines are really busy!

Nobody should be replacing curly quotes with straight quotes by hand (or in any other way — curly quotes are curly because the look better that way).

and sure enough, cantonese is marked up because something in the ingest or render pipeline doesn’t understand UTF-8.

That’s without preview.

Test 2 was built by copying the raw HTML &xxx markup from the result of test 1. It didn’t suffer from the snowball effect that others see.

Something in the software is not understanding UTF-8.
