One very best cavalry is Harold Sinclair’s 1956 novel Horse Soldiers. It is based on the historic 17-day Grierson’s Raid and the basis of the John Wayne Movie of the same name.

Another good book if you can find it is Reveille by James Warner Bella. It is a series of short stories written Bellah on which Ford/Wayne cavalry trilogy was based. Almost IMPOSSIBLE to find though.
