This is TWA 800 all over again. They’d rather say it was Charizard the Fire Pokémon than admit it was downed by a SAM.
Why?
Because it was probably a US made weapon. Because the Russians can’t afford to make this conflict such that it completely shuts down the economy, or launches all out sanctions on Russia. They are barely making it right now. Putin is getting things done on the presumption nobody wants to go toe-to-toe with the Russians and launch WWIII (or WWIV if you count the last 10 years as a world war).
