Cagney was a vaudeville hoofer before he became an actor playing punks and bad guys during the heyday of the Hollywood gangster period. If you get a chance check out “Yankee Doodle Dandy”, the biography of George M. Cohan. Then you’ll see Cagney at his best. Although you may have to swallow a little gorge at the end where there’s a scene with an off camera FDR. But hey, it was 1942 and Franklin was CIC leading the nation through a really rough time.
