There are some so called "Conservative", even here on FR, that do not see the existential threat that unmitigated immigration poses, both illegal an legal. That is why that don't "get" Trump.

I think they equate Cruz’s Christianity as being the core of a conservative. There are aspects to that, however, Jimmy Carter ran on his Southern Baptist creds as a Sunday School teacher, and look how that turned out. We aren’t electing a pastor of a church.
