It appears that carry trades are not the only thing blowing up in China. A massive explosion, fireball, and mushroom cloud can be seen at chemical storage facility in the Chinese port town of Tianjin...

*AT LEAST 100 PEOPLE HOSPITALIZED AFTER TIANJIN BLAST: XINHUA

As The Telegraph reports,

Series of explosions in Tianjin, northern China, caused a huge mushroom cloud and triggered shockwaves that could be felt miles away

Footage circulating online appears to show a massive explosion in China's northern Tianjin.

Reportedly caused by flammable cargo, videos from the scene show a dramatic fireball exploding near the site of a fire.

The official Xinhua news agency said the blast happened at around 11:30 pm (1630 GMT), when a deafening bang was heard as plumes of flame lit up the sky, scattering dust dozens of metres into the air.

It is still unclear what buildings and how many people were affected by the explosion, but one man filming was blown off his feet by the force.

Tianjin hospital says 100 casualties have already arrived, many with severe burns.

Tianjin is a major port and industrial area to the south-east of the Chinese capital, Beijing

I read that story, and it makes it sound like it was just an explosion, nothing too big, but significant enough to put cracks in nearby buildings.

Then I look at reports coming in from Chinese social media, and 6.2 miles away, people are showing cracks in buildings, windows broken.

Watch this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a1aHADL2a24

Second explosion happens at 44 seconds in, shock wave reaches the camera at 52 seconds, putting it roughly 1.75 miles from the epicenter. Watch a bit longer, and you can see the scale of the resulting firestorm.

The initial fire might have been explosives, but from what I can see, miles of industrial area were set ablaze from the second explosion, and if the shockwave was that strong 1.75 miles away, I’d guess that a very large population has been deeply affected by this.

A container loaded with explosives being moved at a port let go..

I could see that being the spark, but the two big explosions? That's MUCH more than a container. Unless China's now shipping antimatter weapons?

A massive explosion shook the northern Chinese city of Tianjin late Wednesday and officials said at least 7 are dead and more than 300 are injured. The cause was not immediately clear.

The explosion erupted at a container port where flammable material was being stored, reported CCTV, China’s state-owned broadcaster.

Thanks for the link. It has been unsettling for me, as my daughter and family are moving to Changchun. SIL is going to be opening the new Ford plant in Harbin. Hope this is just an accident.

It was apparently a fire at a gasoline storage facility. The tanks shown in the pre-explosion picture are huge.

Old combat engineer here- I agree. That was a whole lot of something that was likely high-order.

After I saw the explosion the first time, I was horrified to see people crowded in the windows. I wonder how many of the injured had no idea what a shock wave can do.

The video reminds me a lot of the movie 'Cloverfield' for some reason.
