The reason the Catholic Church didn't recognize Israel is because it was founded as a Jewish state, and there is a contradiction between "bringing all things to Christ" and recognizing a nation founded officially on a religion that denies Christ's Divinity. The rub comes from the Vatican recognizing formally Islamic nations without fuss.

I wonder if that book mentions the pervasive collaboration between Jewish people in Spain and the Moors (which didn't benefit them in the end, the Moors ended up doing exactly what you'd expect).
