Trump Fans, It’s Time for An Intervention

by JONAH GOLDBERG July 11, 2015

The following is Jonah Goldberg’s weekly “news”letter, the G-File. Subscribe here to get the G-File delivered to your inbox on Fridays. Dear Reader (and those of you with better things to do), There have been times in the past when I’ve gotten crosswise with certain segments of the conservative base and/or with the readership of National Review. And, because, like the Elephant Man, I am a not an animal but a human being, I have always had at least some self-doubt. That’s as it should be.

People who share principles should not only hear each other out when they disagree; they should be able to see each other’s points and hold open the possibility that one’s opponents have the better argument. This is not one of those times, at least not for me. I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake.

I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. I’m watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage.

Imagine if, instead of Trump, it had been Bush 43, Rove, Boehner, McConnell, Krauthammer, Will and McCain who had brought out all these issues regarding illegal immigration.

We would not be in the mess we are today.
America would still be America.
Crime would be reduced 25%.
Democrats would be a distinct minority.
You wouldn’t be pushing 2 for English.
You could get treated at the Emergency Room before you bled to death.
Your kids would be learning stuff at schools.
California would still be an American state.
You wouldn’t have lost your job.
Your neighbor wouldn’t be 10 ladder trucks and an all night salsa party.

But instead, we have Boehner, McConnell, Will, Rubio, Ryan, Bush, Christie, McCain, Graham living in their illegal-free gated communities condemning the one person with guts to fight this idiocy and save America.

Go Donald. I may not even vote for you, but you have done more for America than anyone since Reagan.

Except Ted Cruz did not do anything tangible like Trump did focusing on illegal immigration. Trump did something now.

Had it not been for him Kathryn Steinle would be collateral damage and the Republicans would be boring us with their lies.

Trump is doing fine. He’s paving the way for a successful Cruz candidacy.

“I really think that he’s so popular right now because he’s NOT a politician.”

I don’t know of one person who thinks that Trump is an actual conservative and only a few that think he would be a good President...
But most of them cheer him for telling the truth about a couple of things, and making the establishment hacks reveal themselves and their true ‘values’ for a change.

And I have always thought that Jonah Goldberg is one of the most over-rated ‘conservative’ voices out there.

but if that killer had a job, then Trump’s ideas would have let him stay in the country. Trump has been for amnesty in the past, just like he was firmly pro-choice. There is no reason I would take him seriously.

Trump is not a conservative, it is not possible I would ever vote for him.

Ted Cruz is the best candidate. That is why the media wants to make this look like a Jeb vs Trump primary, and they are doing it on purpose.

Trump wouldn’t deport either.

Trump wouldn’t do anything. He’s a joke. Nothing Trump says means anything, he doesn’t believe a word of it.

Jonah Goldberg in the end is a defender of the GOP Establishment and a “Beltway Conservative” in the tradition of folks like M. Stanton Evans of “Human Events” (Ann Coulter’s mentor).

The Beltway Conservatives defended RIchard NixOn in his fight with the liberal media to the point of wanting the Fairness Doctrine imposed on them like the Democrats used it against conservative media when they controlled the White House.

He’s defending Jeb in the end from attack by Trump.

I’m no Trump fan, I just want Jeb down on the ground and a real conservative to emerge on the nominee.

I think that’s a plausible argument and most likely. Its even plausible that Trump is there to suck conservative air out of other campaigns to deflate them so Jeb can win.

“Trump wouldn’t do anything. He’s a joke. Nothing Trump says means anything, he doesn’t believe a word of it.”

Maybe yes, maybe no, but since he’s talking A LOT MORE about the issue than anyone else, he gets my support.

HANDS DOWN!

I don’t plan on voting for Trump but how is his con any worse than the GOPe con or the DemonRat con? Is there someone out there who isn’t conning us you’re not telling us about, Jonah?

It is vastly more plausible that he is a stalking horse for his dear friend Hillary Clinton than he is a sincere conservative.”

Yes, it's plausible. But the truth is, it only works because the NRO/GOP-e was leaving the big issue, immigration, on the table. If the Stupid party had picked it up, they'd have a chance to win had they handled it correctly. But they won't, and so it was free for use as a wedge issue to split the NRO/GOP-e wing of the Republican Party from the conservatives.

Surely there is some level below total open borders that the gravitas folks could have promoted. But they are not willing to say anything at all on the topic, for fear that they will be misquoted and hammered by the left.

So the problem isn't Trump, the problem is their own deficiencies in stating their postion, and cowardice.

The interesting part is that people who support him buy into rhetoric and nothing more. Well, Boehner and Republicans talked like Conservatives too...and we see where that has gotten us as a nation.

What none of these people can answer is WHERE does the Donald STAND on the other issues? He hasn’t said anything to my knowledge on the recent SCOTUS rulings. He claims he supports the 2nd, while opposing aspects of it in the past. He keeps evolving on issues, but they don’t care.

He has been a Democrat a long time...he supported Obama and gave tons of money to the Clintons.

And yet, Jonah Goldberg is a tool. Yep, the same people trolling Cruz, are now upset that Goldberg is right...

With all due respect, NR, just shut up.

I’m done with these constant “we know what’s best for you” articles. They are now becoming obnoxious and condescending as anything from the left.
