Women’s Soccer Doesn’t Deserve Equal Pay

Pay equality activists are at it again. This time they’re using the success of the U.S. women’s soccer team in the World Cup final to push their agenda. According to Politico, what we really need to be talking about is the players’ paychecks.

“Pay for professional women’s soccer players is at best paltry and at worst outright shameful compared to those of their male counterparts. (The U.S. men’s team is currently ranked 27, compared with the world-champion women),” Mary Pilon writes. “Yet the total payout for the Women’s World Cup this year will be $15 million, compared with the total for the men’s World Cup last year of $576 million, nearly 40 times as much.”

Pilon blames greedy broadcasters for the vast disparity, saying they haven’t valued women’s sports equally. It doesn’t matter that there isn’t the same level of interest for women’s soccer. There would be more viewers, she argues, if broadcasters just bit the bullet and promoted women’s soccer with the same gusto.

"1. illegal immigrants who weren’t raised on (real) football"

No, even illegal immigrant men don't watch WOMEN'S soccer.

For 13 years I stood on the sidelines of collegiate sports.

Soccer player, both men and women were the most disrespectful and dirtiest players I saw. Over thousand of games, from all collegiate sports at all levels the soccer players were simply the worst.

And generally speaking, the refs let them get away with the most.

I wouldn’t watch a soccer game unless I was getting paid.

The women were almost as bad as the men.

Ha ha...no, just not a fan of soccer.

For example, I saw a soccer player get knocked down. It was a clean play. He got up and started screaming at the ref who stood there and took it.

Compare that to a lacrosse player that got similarly hit. He got up and asked the ref, “ Did you see that?” The Ref said “yeah, You got your ass kicked. Better get down to that other end before they score on you.”

Just because soccer players say “F You Sir” doesn’t make them classy.

To each his own. I am a big fan of soccer, but played baseball in college. You should have heard to banter going around back then 35 years ago. “Kick the dog”, “Punch a hole in your mask”, “Your missing a good game” were some of my favorites. Those were mild compared to what we said to each other. Woe to the pitcher who had a weight problem, “Hey, have another burger.” Nowadays the NCAA has banned all the fun from the game. Ragging, as we called it, has become a thing of the past.

Gubment Soccer. Let the Gubment make up the leagues. That’s the solution.

“Just split the gate receipts and sponsorship fees. Seems fare.”

Why yes, it would be. And “fair,” too.

Volleyball is the ONLY sport where it is more entertaining and exciting to watch women play than men.

There are some weekends during the winter when there are 3 or more junior volleyball tournaments each with more than 800 teams participating.

There are some juniors volleyball clubs that have in excess of 80 teams in various age groups, and it isn’t cheap to play.

As an aside, if you can “score” a volleyball game you can find a great part time job three nights a week and all day Saturday working college games.

No sports Information guy wants to miss a football start on Saturday afternoon because they cannot find a scorekeeper for that volleyball game that starts at noon!

“Your missing a good game”

That works right up to the moment the ref replies with, "I know, but I got assigned to this one."

That 3000 average attendance is actually much less on game day. That number is based on per-season ticket sales (much of it made by corporate sponsors which give the tickets away for free). Many of those paid seats are empty on the day of the game. The true average attendance based on gate ticket sales is less than 1000.
