It’s a short lived fad.
A few years ago (the last time there was a same sex marriage case before the court? The Prop 8 decision maybe?) there was an online campaign to change their profile pics to the “equals” sign. I was unaware of that symbol in the initial phase altogether (blue square with yellow equals). I figured when I saw it in traffic it was some kind of oil change customer appreciation tag or something.
Later they changed it to red square with pink equals signs.
