I don't know about the "best", but he is definitely up there.
Think of Billy Cobham, Bill Bruford, Chester Thompson and others too many to name here.....
I'm always cautious about who is the "best", as it is so personal but one thing for sure is that they are all unique and that is what separates them.
Those guys were the pioneers building on Buddy Rich and Gene Crupa et. al..
Ya beat me to it. I was gonna say Bill Bruford. Interesting you say Chester Thompson. Been listening to a bunch of Zappa when he was there. Saw him with Genesis in Atlanta, many years ago.
