As I understood it, yes, there was growing debate over "the most peculiar institution" (as Lincoln refered to slavery). It's days were numbered anyway. But the South could NOT abide by having Lincoln as their President. Upon his being elected, the Southern States began to succeed. Lincoln said, "no, you are not allowed to succeed". His whole thing was about preserving the Union (a house divided cannot stand, etc). His motive, regardless of why the Southern States were succeeding, was to keep the country united. The best sources for his stance on the matter of the War is in his First and Second Innaugural speeches.

As the War dragged out, men's minds evolved. Motivations evolved. The South found itself defending not just the peculiar institution but it's very land. The North came to realize it could leverage a win by making it about slavery.
