Side note, in 1985 I took 4th place in my age group in a 10k race which started and finished at the Citadel.
The main reason I wound up stationed at Charleston AFB was because I had read Pat Conroy’s “The Lords of Discipline” (set at the Citadel/Charleston) while stationed in a remote part of Turkey, and based on the book, I requested orders there because Charleston seemed like such a wonderful place...it was.
