Help With Virus/Malware (Vanity)

Posted on 06/10/2015 5:10:39 PM PDT by Portcall24

My wife got a new computer and somehow she has picked up 7769domain virus. I ran Malwarebytes to no avail. It's still there. Searching a couple of places like Spyhunter and others offer help but I'm not sure if they are legit. Sure could use some help.

Do all the above, no one tool finds and fixes everything

I just got Win 8.1 tweaked to run like what folks say Win 7 runs like and it running very good, yesterday a flag pops up in my system tray telling me I can upgrade to Win 10 for free.

From what I hear its more disabled and stripped down than 8.1 was from 7.

Argh!

No, it is a popular program that I have used for at least 10 years, and currently use, and always the free version.

Thanks so very much for all of the helpful replies. I ran ADW, Junkware Removal Tool, Malwarebytes and then reset IE. So far, so good. FR, is my home away from home. It is always nice to be among friends that you can trust.

Did you do the deepest Malwarebytes scan, or the normal scan?

I don’t think any of the major anti-virus players would of survived that attack.

Believe they’re giving a warning to everyone that they may be next.

By the way l use the paid version of Malwarebytes on Win 10 with very good results.

I think normal scan. It took about 35 minutes for about 350,000 files. That included the heuristic analysis. Whatever that is.

Do a deeper scan by clicking on the scan button and click on “custom” scan, then the “configure” button, and check everything, including “rootkit”, then start the scan.

That deep scan is much slower, it could be 2 or 3 hours, but you can use your computer while it scans, and it really digs into the system.

By the way, I do all of my security scans on the toughest settings, search all files, archives, follow links, etc, and do the fullest, longest scans.

I’ve had good luck with HitmanPro, they let you run a trial version and its fixed some pretty messed-up systems.

Avast let cryptowall through and it destroyed 4 hard drives. Using Bitdefender currently. Much better program. It even pulled virus attachments out of my mailbox.pab(?) file when Avast let them sit there. JMO. ;)

Use Norton Power Eraser...

It is free and it works. Easy to use. I have used it successfully.

Do the following. Your profile - your account is infected by the virus/spyware/adware

Log into the administrator account and install the anti spyware programs to get rid of the hacker.

Enable the (Hidden) Administrator Account on Windows 7, 8, or Vista

I use the free version and find it does all I need. I also use AVG and SpyWare Blaster as well. The combo of those three seems to keep my machine's clean.

A little addendum to my last post. I’m reaching here.

The attack on Kaspersky may have been intended for Putin’s benefit for his incursion of Ukraine

My wife got a new computer and somehow she has picked up 7769domain virus

If the computer is new and your wife has not been able to use it as she wishes then I suggest she do a "Full Recovery". This will put the computer back to the way it was when it was new.

Save important files and be prepared to install all programs that she may have added later.
