The simplicity and absolutism of this conception has combined with the precarity of academic jobs to create higher ed's current climate of fear, a heavily policed discourse of semantic sensitivity in which safety and comfort have become the ends and the means of the college experience.

Probably the only logical outcome of years of multiculturalism, all sorts of ethnic studies, women's studies, queer studies and on and on. So many groups with so many grievances have emerged that little can be evaluated objectively, let alone openly criticized.

When I started reading articles about 'safe zones' and how the hypersensitive feelings of students had begun to dictate what discourse was acceptable, I knew a new realm of idiocy and degeneracy had been entered.

I wonder if the good professor has considered the long term consequences of this trend.

It will continue to make liberal college graduates even LESS employable in the private sector where real knowledge and results matter.

Political correctness is self inflicted delusion. If practiced by a critical number of people, especially people in important political, social and business positions, an entire culture corrodes due to a dearth of analytical thinking and expression.
However this professor makes it clear why it is important to bring lawsuits against institutions and individuals that implement and enforce free speech codes. Its important to hold them personally and financially responsible for violations of civil rights.

If this guy teaches writing he needs to learn how to teach people to write things that will hold the readers’ attention. Very boring.

There are places like N Korea where nothing offensive is ever said publicly. And there are places like Zimbabwe where race trumps everything. Both are basket cases.

Well, it looks as if the Red Guard has arrived and the Cultural Revolution is on. I suppose that was inevitable from the beginning of the Long March Through The Institutions but I didn't think I'd live to see it.

Oh, yes, we've been down this road before, or at least the Chinese have. The author complains that he faces a choice between guarding his every word carefully with respect to the political enthusiasms of the moment or being subjected to a show trial and a public pillory. There is a scene in the movie The Last Emperor wherein the title character sees the teacher who guided him through his own brutal re-education paraded through the streets of Beijing with a dunce cap on his head; his regret is that the kindness shown him by that teacher, such as it was, is not even remotely present in the fanatical eyes of the student fascists. I felt the same sort of moral ambiguity toward that poor teacher as I do to the author, who fortunately is faced only with a possibly inconvenient unemployment should he fail to mind his political correctitude.

It is interesting that he feels the thing is somehow better for his conservative colleagues, if indeed he has any. It isn't. Certain conservative professors of my acquaintance have had to adopt a rather unapologetic confrontational approach developed in faculty lounges, and it is sweetly ironic to contemplate that it is a survival skill that stands them in good stead in the current environment. Unfortunately, that's mostly fantasy.

But it certainly does appear to the author to have gone bad very quickly. I'm not so sure. He cites 2009 as the Good Old Days, but the problem dates well before that. If only now the Little Red Books have begun to appear in student hands and the chanting begun, it doesn't mean the source of the underlying problem is recent. He can find it, though, if he looks in a mirror.

Try and wrap your head around THIS sentence:

" If we subscribe to the belief that ideas can be judged within a vacuum, uninfluenced by the social weight of their proponents, we perpetuate a system in which arbitrary markers like race and gender influence the perceived correctness of ideas. "

This article makes me feel marginalized, but I’m not sure it is a micro-aggression, or its sexier variant, the micro-mini-aggression.

Chait . . . ideas can and should be judged both by the strength of their logic and by the cultural weight afforded to their speaker's identity. Chait appears to believe only the former, and that's kind of ridiculous. Of course someone's social standing affects whether their ideas are considered offensive, or righteous, or even worth listening to. How can you think otherwise?

This is mostly a fairly well written article by a clearly intelligent man, but there are a few nutty beliefs like this one mixed in. Believing that identity is relevant to truth is his tragic flaw. That liberal centerpiece of his world view made him an academic success, and it is what will destroy him and his field.

The Pythagorean Theorem is true - or false - regardless of whether the speaker is an old while heterosexual male or a twenty-something Hispanic trans-lebsian. The Watts Towers are stable - or not - regardless of whether the designer is an uneducated black man or a young female Muslim illegal with a PhD in gender studies. Nimitz, Spruance, Kinkaid, Yamamoto, Kondo, and Yanagimoto fought at Gettysburg - or they didn't - regardless of the speaker's melanin level or feelings about social justice.

"Cultural weight" associated with identity, and its claimed relevance to truth are insane concepts that should be dismissed and ridiculed at every opportunity.
