Last week The Ryersonian reported on an incident that involved two first-year journalism students who were turned away from an event organized by Racialized Students' Collective because they are white. Since then there has been a lot of commentary on the piece and a lot of debate -- a lot of the criticism is valid.
There are two sides to the story: 1) the media has a right to attend public events and report on matters that are in the public interest. The student media needs to cover initiatives that are happening on campus so that we draw attention to them and in turn create awareness (The Ryersonian reported that one student said he was covering the meeting for an assignment). 2) Marginalized groups have a right to claim spaces in the public realm where they can share stories about the discrimination they have faced without judgment and intrusion from anyone else.
I am a person of colour and a journalist and so there are two conflicting voices inside my head. But in this case one voice, that of a person of colour, is louder and my conscience does not allow me to be impartial. I have to take a side.
The organizers of the event, the Racialized Students' Collective, should have done a better job of labelling this event as a safe space on the Ryerson Students' Union online calendar. They should label safe spaces clearly and maybe even host events that educate the public on what they mean. Doing so will help the public and the media have a better understanding of the purpose and value of these spaces.
However, the point to note is not that two white students were asked to leave the event...

I don’t care WHERE they go, as long as they GO.
“person of colour”
If we take this out of passive voice and use active voice instead, what do we get?
Excellent analysis, very much enjoyed reading your response. Thanks!!
That must mean...
White people deserve safe spaces without ethnic minorities.
But no. That would be racist.
So, I guess it’s now back to segregation.
So we’ve come full circle. Remember this from George Wallace back in 1963?
“segregation now, segregation tomorrow and segregation forever”-George Wallace.
Now people of color are calling for SEGREGATION! That means since 1963 the government has been overseeing a failed experiment.
Reminds me of what one of the girls who desegregated Central High School(1957) said back in the 1990s.
She returned for a visit and gave a speech to the classes there. She then noticed all the black kids had their heads on the desk and were refusing to listen.
She then realized she had put her life on the line, so black kids could go to a white school, put their heads on the desk and refuse to learn.
Her actual words were...”I went through HELL for this?”
Safe Spaces Without White People
We just had a major story of a white family being butchered by a black murderer. Those kinds of black on white murders happen every week. When was the last time you read a story of innocent blacks being murdered by white(s)?
No problem, it's called Zimbabwe, Saudi, etc etc. Lol, they are proposing separate but equal.
Hah! Author is hoist on his own retard.
Sort of reminds me of a book title my wife and I read when our daughter was a teenager.
“GET OUT OF MY LIFE, but first can you take me and Megan to the mall?”
Or something like that.
“A safe space free of the white man’s standards of performance.
A safe space free of the white man’s standards of behavior.”
That’s all I can think of. Safe from the accountability required in civil society?
I haven’t ever been where it is unsafe to not be white, though I imagine there must be some places. Perhaps some FReeper can enlighten me as to where it is unsafe to be a “person of color” in this country. I have, however, been where it is unsafe to be white.
Prison with black guards?
Exactly. That is why it is futile to try and deal honestly with these people. They were never after full equality....which would have meant competing on an equally uneven playing field. It was always all about getting even with Evil Whitey and having special privileges.
DO SOMETHING!
“Hah! Author is hoist on his own retard.”
I’m stealing that.
;-)
When “they” grant ME safe passage through the ‘hood, I’ll consider leaving them a safe space on my block. Not that they’d be in any danger without one...
You know I think that Booker T Washington, Medgar Evers, and folks like them are rolling in their graves saying “what the hell sacrifice my life for”, and I do not blame them and as for that lady you spoke of, I feel sorry for her, she showed great courage only to find out the folks she fought for do not give a damn.
Then they’ll complain about “white flight.”
So white people as a majority of large groups or small groups by themselves is in itself considered racist, AKA, bad.
Whites are not supposed to have their own social groups, pride in history, neighborhoods, events - but everyone else.
Whites are supposed to suffer second class (or lower) status in hiring, firing, promotions, scholarships, admission to competitive classes like AP or honors programs.
And all while being told they have to foot the bill.
Blacks and liberals don’t want to undo the damage of the past by making everyone equal.
They want to invert the social structure of the 1950s, punishing an innocent generation for the supposed sins of the fathers.
All while making whites the modern untouchables, sent to do the dangerous and dirty work while propping up society.
