“like food cart vendors? what other small business could be considered to be Like...a food cart vendor??

“The funds to cover the cost of the 500 free carts doesn’t come from the city, but rather through a slew of donations and private partnerships, and 100 of the carts are earmarked for disabled veterans.”

Food carts are big, small business in NYC—and their current noise and emissions are a major source of pollution in very crowded streets.

If I understand correctly, the manufacturer is essentially donating these carts. If so, I don’t see anything not to like in this news.

Okay, I see now the cost is covered by donors. That’s fine with me too. It’s how a lot of the arts, parks and other civic goods get funded in the city.

Did anybody notice the lack of SUNSHINE in those concrete canyons of NYC?

If I had a brick and mortar cafe in NYC, I’d be highly pissed to have these things parking out front every morning...

How long before someone gets sick from food that wasn't kept sufficiently hot or cold?
Yea I know, buying from a NYC street vendor, you have only yourself to blame.

G Larry asks the correct question about available effective sunshine.

I’m going to guess nobody bothered to test some prototypes at various locations in Manhattan or the other boroughs for real world energy numbers.

If the panel is a true representation it is in the range of 100-120 watts under the best of conditions. Building shadows and idling buses will limit usable sun energy, but hey Solar, the magic word.

Wonder if the cart mfr received a subsidy from Golf-1?

Probably for the halal hucksters. Also, where do these guys go when they need to use a toilet? Surely not in the brick-and-mortar, tax paying restaurant in front of which they’re parked.

What? The city doesn’t provide portable toilets for each cluster of vending carts?
