I'm quite partial to the old-fashioned sentiment expressed by this lawman. Who said this? Major kudos to whoever knows correct answer. It's not an easy one.
Hint #1: "Go west, young man." -Horace Greeley
Hint #2: In his day, police were commonly known as peace officers.
Hint #3: His officers would have cruised in cars like this one.
"Good evening, friends. In dealing with the public, the average policeman finds that every man has an inherent spark of honor which never dies, no matter how much he disagrees with society's concepts of right or wrong. Twenty-two years of police work has not outlasted this conviction in my own heart, and I have found in this work the innumerable situations justifying this belief in human beings. The successful police officer makes it a policy to deal with the criminal element first as man to man, treating him as a free man with the age-old theory that every person is deemed to be innocent until proved to be guilty."
There’s the Purvis clue which leads up, and post #5 refers to coincidence of names. Think middle name.
wildbill, thanks for the introduction to Ranger Sterling. Sounds very interesting.
That might be a strong clue considering that legendary lawman’s latter years.
Deputy Dawg?
James Edgar “Two-Gun” Davis.
Except Wyatt Earp was primarily a gambler and land speculator in the final decades of his life. He had an honorary deputy title in the 1920s, but he had no police authority. Also the picture shows a 1933 Ford which Earp would never live to see.
The Earp-related feature which connected to the mystery lawman was Los Angeles where Earp spent his later years.
Oops! My previous post was meant for Jenny.
Interesting. Wikipedia doesn’t speak in glowing terms about him.

That was a tough one. I wasn’t sure until I looked up his middle name.
I, too, was thinking Wyatt Earp.
Ready to read further, and see who has the right answer...
Wit and wisdom aplenty at FRP. Special thanks to everyone who contributed.
