As I age and lose memory, I find myself reminiscing and, here in FR .. a lot of us DO reminisce about an America we are forced to accept as gone and for me, part of what's gone is an organization ... indeed many organizations (drum corps') that took kids off the streets, taught them discipline, music, co-ordination and a commeraderie that lives with us to this day ... not unlike the band of brothers, yet not as intense
If you have any questions, I may have to refer you to my younger brother whose memory is more intact
Five of us knarfs were in the 'Saders and at one time, briefly .. three of us ... my mother was made an official member before she died
enjoy
The Boston Crusaders .. a history

Timely name, now that you mention it.
My father used to takes to the CYO competitions every summer for years. I remember when one corp -- can't recall which -- played "Karn Evil 9" by Emerson, Lake and Palmer.

“drum corps’”
And that is pronounced, “ drum corpse”, right?.....Or at least that is what Obemba says it is.

Part of my '62 - '65 heritage I was in St Williams band from 1943 until 1954. I was there before Dom Bianculli showed up and whipped us into shape.
I marched in competition against the Crusdaers many times. They were the band to beat, And I believe we won a few. -Tom -

A bit before my time. I was in the Toledo OH Glassmen 83-84. I then joined the Rosemont Ill Cavilers 85-87. Some of the best times of my life.

Love the 67-69 Boston Crusaders. I joined the Hawthorne Muchachos in ‘69. When we competed against the Crusaders in July of 69, I felt like we had made the big time !
I went on to the Caballeros - won 3 DCA titles, and 1American Legion title.
But I’ve never forgotten the Boston Crusaders.

The link I posted is loaded with historical data, a lot I never knew and some I wasn't present .. US Army 65 - 67
Pretty much 'left' my old life to join in with the hippie, drug, sex, political climate of the late sixties
Now I'm old(er) and regret a lot ... but thank God for memories and heritage

To fellow corpsman and freeper. I played french horn bugle with the Pittsbugh Rockets from 62 to 67 and everything you say is exactly correct. It was not just the discipline or the commeraderie, it was also the travel and the excitement of competing in the Nationals. That I will always remember. Alas, regarding memories, Henry Matisse said “I am growing old,I delight in the past..”

Loved the Crusaders in the early 60’s. Drafted in 64 for two years. Loved them again until ‘74. I’ve bled Blue Devil blue ever since.
I’ll see Boston in Akron again this year and will make my 27th DCI in August.
