They need to be called out on a lot of things.
A lot of horrible deeds “committed by Christians” weren’t done in the name of Christianity at all.
I’ve been rooting around in original documents from people involved in the Salem “witch” trials and am shocked at how different reality is from popular history. For instance, the church elders weren’t whipping the people into a frenzy to expose witches. In fact the church was desperately trying to stamp out false accusations born out of simple things like jealousy or greed. One accusation was the result of nosy neighbors not approving of the living arraingments of a single woman and her indentured servant.
Salem sure was an example of what happens when people (clergy or lay, whichever) try to root out unholiness in an unholy manner. Confusion and mutual injuries.
Sounds like today’s HOA.
