I never served and even I can spot most of these frauds. When I was driving for Trailways I got a guy on who was telling wild stories of being a machine gunner on a Marine tank. I had a lot of college girls on board heading home for a holiday so he was really piling on the hero BS. I asked him how the liked the new MG-42 machine gun and he raved about it. After he got off several of the girls started debating whether he was for real. I told them that being he didn't know that the Marines didn't use WWII German machines gun I doubted it. They thought that was hilarious.
