JFK (a good personal friend of Joe McCarthy) was probably the last Democrat Present elected that did not owe more than half his support to those who found no objection to including Communism in the national dialogue.

If not for Joe McCarthy refusing to come to Massachusetts (at the behest of papa Joe Kennedy) to campaign for Henry Cabot Lodge, America would never have heard of the Kennedy's because Sen. Lodge would have beaten John Kennedy with a Joe McCarthy appearance. The Catholic McCarthy was wildly popular in then Catholic Massachusetts.
