I dislike the idea of a shootout. That is, them shooting at you, too. This is why in situations like this, I am a big believer in double-door “airlock” entrances.
They are pretty simple in concept. A strong steel frame holding thick laminate panels. A sign outside the door says “One person at a time. No hats, hoodies, or sunglasses, please. Doorbell to request entry.” An employee pushes a buzzer to unlock the outer door.
The inner door cannot open until the outer door is shut and locked, and visa versa. Then the other door *may* be opened.
The last trick is that the employees guns have steel bullets, that can penetrate laminate. So, their bullets can’t leave the box, but yours can pass right through.

A good idea for retail outlets that are at risk.
It is a variation of what I call “stand off barriers”.
The idea is to keep the people wishing entry at a distance and observable until you decide to let them in.... or not.
I’ve seen that in some high end jewelry stores.
The only places I have seen that regularly around here are coin shops. Great idea. I would think it would be more common the closer to mid-city we get, for all kinds of stores.
Is there a thug so stupid as to fire a gun while in an “air lock” style door? Wouldn’t the muzzle blast be enough to cause bleeding ears?
Or does their half empty cranium allow for absorbtion of the sound?
