Sound more like Brooklyn. I grew up in Manhattan in the '50s and the running joke was:
[On a school outing]. Jimmie from Brooklyn: "Look! A boid!' English teacher: "Jimmy, that's not a 'boid' ". Jimmy: "Then why does it choip?"
