I suspect her softening her tone has to do with the fact that after the press leaves, she has to live in that town where (it would seem) folks are tired of her and coming to despise her.
that and the fact she has to check all her food made outside her house for unwanted body fluids (spit)it’s terrible what some teenagers on a lark might do.
