For one thing using a Carrier as a hospital ship would mean using Hanger deck and Flight deck as a place for the contained units. You would be lucky to get needed containment berths for 400 much less 4000 patients. Air Conditioning is also a biggie. And they use chill water units. So is desalinating enough potable water for the extra sanitation. On a ship water for steam takes priority over everything else and food prep is second. Showers is on down the list.

The wiring issues alone would be a total logistical nightmare because Water Tight Integrity must still be maintained. Using an active duty CVN or re-purposing one is a loss we can not afford and we need all our carriers. GW should be refuled on schedule.

There seems to be this line of thinking this is the military's problem. Plumbing on a CVN is not like you think it is either. The waste has to go somewhere.

Above all else this crisis will pass long before any combat ship could be modified for such a undertaking. It would likely be quicker to build a new ship. The old carriers? Nope. Two plus years needed to get one up and going and they are worn out anyway. Again you can build a conventional carrier in about that time frame in a pinch.

And Once Again this should not be a military mission to start with.

Because the GW would not be in a combat role the electrical power generation of the GW is enough to provide A/C to anything I suggest as the Air Con units would be attached to each IICU not an extension of water chilling. Electrical cabling can be handled it is a logistical feat not a technological hurdle ... and as you know - the flight deck is 4.5 acres - only used for helicopter landing and take off under my plan ... I have meticulously calculated that using prefabricated IICUs .. doubled decked - on the Flight Deck and in the huge Hanger areas below decks - divided into three sections will house over 4000 such IICUs I have computed square footage and cubic footage.

Congress has shown no signs of putting up 5 BILLION dollars to Refuel the GW versus putting the money into the new carriers coming on line... Google and take a read.

Under the flag of a Hospital Ship other Western Nations could be asked to help foot the bill when refueling time came — not to mention asking Saudi Arabia to help pay.

All combat equipment would be removed... including all aircraft except helicopters. Crew would be between 500 to 1000 ... not 4500 to 6000. Steam used for catapult would not be needed as the GW becoming the U.S.S Compassion would be non combat.

Water and Sanitation? I spelled out that the crew would become a skeleton crew enhanced by personnel from other Western countries .. the demand for water and sanitation would be greatly reduced and available for use by medical personal.

On the extra space on the Flight Deck is room for conventional high kilowatt generators and state of the art desalination systems if needed.

It would not be a military mission - it would be a military supported mission on a ship totally transformed for a non military mission including no requirement for supporting any aspect of aircraft landing and take off except for helicopters ... The GW would become the U.S.S, Compassion - a totally non combat ship protected by tender ships and security ships supplied by NATO... YES it is a Grandiose Plan — but our Nation sits on its thumb wondering what to do ... I say - GO BIG and Get it done...
