This installment continues by exposing how James Buchanan worked diligently to spread and defend slavery.

Democrat President James Buchanan supported the Compromise of 1850 which required the repeal of the Missouri Compromise, forbidding the spread of slavery west of Missouri. He condemned Republican David Wilmot’s bill, known as The Wilmot Proviso, which would have forbidden the expansion of slavery to territory gained in the Mexican War. The Wilmot Proviso was defeated by Southern Democrats.

Buchanan was an author of the Ostend Manifesto. The Ostend Manifesto urged the annexation of Cuba by force and expansion of slavery into the territory. This Democrat proposal was introduced because the Spanish government was considering abolishing slavery in Cuba – not content with promoting slavery only at home, the Democrats opposed other nations’ abolition of slavery. The Lecompton Constitution: the Tenth Amendment be damned

In spite of the clear and abundant evidence that the Border Ruffians of Missouri had poured into Kansas and fraudulently voted for a pro slavery constitution for Kansas (known as the Lecompton Constitution); and against the pleas of the man he appointed as its governor, Buchanan formally requested that Congress admit Kansas as a slave state. At the time he opined that Kansas was, “as much a slave state as Georgia or South Carolina.”

This fraud was too much even for House Democrats. While the Democrat controlled Senate eagerly voted to accept the fraud, the Congress would not go along. When the stink from the affair became too great, Congress ordered a new free election and slavery in Kansas was voted down by about 85% of its people. [31]

Buchanan’s clumsy attempt to garner favor with Southern Democrats only made things worse. Probably the way today’s Democrats felt when their attempt to steal the 2000 Presidential Election was...
