My kids are always amazed when I do tip calculation or other every day math in my head faster than they can on a phone calculator or paper.
Every one of these solutions seems completely random.

My 4th grader’s teacher is hyped up on some kind of new math.
It’s not working. The math test score is trending steeply downward. I’ll be stepping in.
Guess Common Core is where the F math students go.
And we know that Climate Research is where the F physics students go.
And congress is where all the rest of the F students go.

When I was a kid I figured out my own way to do something like that, but much easier. In that example, I would subtract 300 from 568 to 268, then add back 7 and get 275. Worked well for simple math, but since I didn’t learn the right way I had problems with higher math. Never did get algebra.
Guess which college majors have the lowest SAT and ACT scores.
Yup. It’s the ones that wind up teaching our kids.
What is up with this madness?? I saw a different solution to another subtraction problem that was equally as convoluted.
Can’t this be stopped ? I mean, is withdrawing your kids from public schools the only way to prevent this at this point ??
I notice that 300 is just seven more than 293.
So I subtract 300 from 568, and get 268.
Then I add back the seven “too many” that I subtracted from 568 when I approximated 293 by 300.
268 + 7 = 275.

Indeed, your way shows you’re already a couple of quantum levels beyond the Common Core trolls.
As for algebra, we could get you up to speed in no time. (I would even try with the Obamadork, there’s no hope there for anything advanced.)
What was curious to me was the idea that they couldn’t take 9 away from 6 without borrowing, but didn’t seem to have any trouble taking 3 away from 0.
I figured out that 293 was 7 short of 300, so I took 300 away from the bigger number and then added 7 back in.
Plus, they forgot that Siri would tell you the answer right away - that’s the reality of stupidity-based education. People won’t think if they can avoid it.

Sounds a little like successive approximation or the old Johansen blocks that machinists use. 80 blocks added together in various combinations can get you amazingly accurate measurements up to about 4 inches.
Google “Jo blocks”. Henry Ford was a believer.
Or you subtract 300 from 568, and add 7. If’n you need more than one step.
My 13 year old grandson, in MA, is one of those kids that finds Math quite easy. He hates this system. He can can the answer in his head most of the time but has to show all of the steps. My 10 year old grand daughter, in CA, cries while doing her Math because it frustrates her so.
They are trying to avoid “borrowing”.
The concept of borrowing confuses some kids.
But it actually makes things more difficult if they don’t tackle these concepts head-on.
