Those rear-transaxle Pontiacs were interesting designs, way ahead of their time. I believe PMD built a handful of custom Tempests with the 421 v8 and a modified Powerglide. The engineers added a second planetary gearset and ended up with a 4-speed automatic that was rugged enough for drag racing (which is what the custom dozen or so Tempests were intended for).

Some of the engine options in that car were very unusual, too. The 4-cylinder was essentially half of a Pontiac v8. GM was capable of some real innovation before the various marques were reduced to different grilles and paint colors.

It's no wonder that they're dropping brands. Since they're all the same, why have Pontiacs and Oldsmobiles in addtion to Chevrolets, Buicks, and Cadillacs?
