I have dealt with a LOT of lawyers in my lifetime, worked with many, but have seen precious few actually sign their name followed by “Esq.” That is usually used in addressing a communication TO a member of the bar, not how they sign their own names.

It’s mainly a black thing, just as they go overboard with “doctor,” “reverend,” “MBA,” and etc.
