Okinawa, not Iwo Jima. Greenfield might have misspoke. Marpi Point, at Saipan, was another location of Japanese civilian mass suicides. Absolutely horrific - I read a few oral histories of it, by Marines who witnessed it.

My grandfather was always glad that they dropped the big one. He (along with a few million other soldiers and marines) was slated to be a part of the invasion, and frankly, wasn't looking forward to it.
