A potential problem with legitimate news sites using photos found on social sites such as twitter or Facebook is that often the original owner of the photo is not found until several links down a chain.

If the original publisher/owner of the photo is Getty, Reuters, AP, Corbis, or any of the sites we have to excerpt here, then it is a copyright violation.

When in doubt the safest thing to do is to simply post a link to the photo.
