I went shopping today for a pair of pants. I was hoping it would only take a few minutes. How difficult could that be in the land of plenty? As I entered the large department store, I was greeted by stifling heat and humidity. This particular department store chain uses smart meters, cycled and controlled by the power company from a remote location in order to “save” them money. Customers and employees suffer because a small group of elites have managed to convince and bribe bureaucrats and politicians into pushing the agenda of non-existent global warming.

They power it off - grid-by-grid, if memory serves - during peak loading. No specific monitoring is involved, beyond "uh-oh, were approaching the red line, shut down smart meters, starting with grid X-432 and rolling over every 15 minutes from there". Approximately.
Now, could smart metering be used for purposes more nefarious? I'm certain it could. But in my particular case - some years ago - it was unobtrusive and saved me a lot of money at a time when I really needed it.
Heads up, folks. You signed up for the same deal if you let them put ‘smart meters; on your house.
they can - and will - control YOUR power usage.
I threatened the meter man, when he came into my yard with the smart meter nuder his arm. with mayhem if he took one step closer to my house with that thing - I had already notified my power co , written and vocal - NO SMART METER! - and they still tried to sneak it on.
Luckily, I was home that day. He tried to reason/argue with me. I told him we were not having a ‘conversation’ - he was to take it and leave, end of communication.
I pay a fine of $12 a month for NOT having it - but they can’t monitor how long I take in the shower, which appliances - and what brands - I have and how often I use them, etc etc - all with their future plans to restrict our usage - give us an ‘allotment’.
Of course, one day, it will no doubt be mandatory - hoping by that time to be pretty much energy independent.
Out here there is a much bigger threat of having your vehicle broken into while shopping in a mall than having your on line delivery stuff stolen. At least once a week in the Gay Bay area a shopper gets the crap beaten out of them in a mall parking lot, gets robbed and their vehicle stolen. So far I have not been robbed nor mugged when picking up my on line order delivered to my front porch.
My wife has been a Talbot shopper since we got married over 50 years ago. They closed our local Talbots about 5 years ago, and she now buys on line. She has never had to return a Talbot purchase and gets free delivery. Their sizes are true sizes. They send a postage paid return mailer with each purchase she makes.
I and many of my younger relatives fish and hunt or kayak. For the most part, we buy our products on sale with free delivery from Cabelas or Bass Pro Shops. Better selection, fast delivery and great prices. Usually, we know more about the products than anyone working in the stores.
3 years ago we bought an expensive 2 person kayak from a so called great dealer. Their concept of service was to remove the plastic shrink wrap and put a roof rack on my pickup that didn’t work. I had to adjust a relign the steering mechanism and other working systems on the yak as there was no adjustments after the shrink wrap was removed. I returned the racks and bought a trailer for the yak. The trailer hitch came off the trailer on the way home and fortunately, I was able to pull over before the safety chain came loose.
Since then I have bought two more yaks on line, one from Cabelas and from an personal online guy. I got discounts/free delivery and did the minor adjustments myself after learning how on line. The adjustments were minor compared to our first yak.
Unfortunately, most of the sales clerks out here have zero product knowledge and they have memorized the assine saying, “No problem”, when you ask for something specific instead of the standard size that fits everyone but you.
On a positive note re an excellent local store. I recently had major foot surgery and got a gift certificate from younger relatives for a proper walking shoe fitting at the local running and walking store. The young sales lady at the store, took about an hour to find my new proper fit for walking shoes to even to ordering special laces for my walking shoes. No way I could get that precise of a shoe fit on line. My future walking shoes will be bought there. We recommend this store about once a week to walkers and the few runners we know.
In the spring/summer/winter, we buy most of our fresh produce from three locals, who raise their products right there and harvest it each morning. After they close down we get good produce from Walmart and our local Safeway.
We have a local sea food monger and a great local butcher shop for special occasions. We shop the seafood specials at Costco and Safeway and get our regular meat/chicken from them and or Walmart.

Out here in Californicator land, it would have cost us a flat fee and about $50/month for not having a smart meter with a guarantee that the monthly charge would go up.
You don’t say where “out here” is but here in Houston we have parking lot robberies as well. When I shop I make sure it is a place where I can valet park. We both have handicapped placards and can park close to the door anyplace we go, if valet is not available.
I will always want to “feel the merchandise “ as mom used to say.
We don’t have a video camera focused on our front door but the evening news show a number of thieves picking up packages right after the UPS truck pulled away from the house. If the crooks haven’t thought of that one in your area......... just wait a minute, they will.
The good thing about choices so far in America is you can shop at stores and malls.
I can avoid malls and shop at home.
We live in the gay Frisco bay area. Feral predators have moved their operations from Oakland/Richmond/San Jose to the large shopping malls in this area.
Houston was dangerous decades ago and probably isn’t better or safer now.
I grew up in Houston “decades ago” and we never even locked our doors or our cars. Things are different now, I must sadly say.

Back in the middle of April, we were eating at the Ryan’s in Conroe, TX.
When we got inside, it was hotter in there than it was outside. When I asked our waitress when the AC was going to be fixed, she said, “Apparently, never.”
She said a couple of months ago Corporate starting controlling all of Ryan’s restaurant temperatures from . . . Eagan, Minnesota.
She said that they’d lost a lot of business with people leaving and asking for their money back, ever since it started to get warmer down in Conroe.
I checked after we got home. The high in Eagan, MN that day was 57.
And I’m bettin’ it was a tad warmer in Conre that day too. LOL!
Me too. I’m paying $129 a night for a hotel, plus the special hotel tax etc. I’m using every towel and I expect fresh ones when I return to my room.
go ahead and get the smart meter, then get solar cells for your house. After that, no worries about them cutting your power.
LOL! With our luck, they’re probably just fabreezing and refolding.
That makes sense.
What worries me is that my air conditioning will shut down when you need it the most — peak hours.
The problem with central air is that it takes a while to cool the rooms down. What might be gained by shutting it down during peak hours might mean that it runs longer into the evening to try to recover. The savings may be nil but I guess it allows the power company to balance the load.
Is there a kill switch on the thermostat?
