“He’s a white man.” Wrong, so the media came up the tortured white-Hispanic. Turns out that even that is wrong. Zimmerman is also part black. Brutally Honest has the perfect summation: “In a delicious irony, it is Zimmerman who might actually look more like the son Obama never had.”
Zimmerman was a person, as the writer said, of mixed-racial ancestry. In the Spanish-speaking Caribbean and Central America, a person with his proportions of racial mixing would have been denominated castizo on his baptismal certificate, which last certified each person's social place for life, officially and finally. (But Roberta Fernandez at the University of Houston, who teaches courses in Spanish that tell students that American culture is existentially racist, also tells them that Hispanic culture, and especially Chicano-studies culture <snort!>, is free of such taints and moral burdens. Your ancestors sliced and diced humanity with over 50 racial and mixed-racial descriptors, many of them familiar to American Western movie fans as character names: cholo, chino, moreno, prieto, and so on. They also gave us memorable new English words from their own language: "octoroon", "quadroon", "mulatto", "negro", "mestizo".)
