Problem: The vast majority of homeless that I’ve seen tend to be mentally ill, or hopelessly addicted to alcohol or drugs.
They need professional help, giving them stuff will usually just keep them alive, and giving them their own Australia to build won’t work either, because they are mostly not in full control of themselves. Unfortunately that kind of help is extremely expensive and lengthy, with no guarantee of success.
The unpleasant fact is that the involuntary commitment laws need to be changed again, not just for this reason, but some others as well. I know that everybody is worried about abuses. I am too, but we have to do our best to put safeguards in place.
